My paintings and drawings of NYC art, look at the subways, architecture and landscapes of Mnahttan in a very unique way. I like to take fantasy with some abstract architecture and give a Syfy feel to my images. Buildings and underground subways infused with art deco and a surreal underworld. A safe maze that you can journey through and a heavenly city on this earth.
The GW Bridge with a red sunset sky in Washington Heights NY
This was inspired by a photograph from John Alsdorf, a photographer living n Washington Heights. I used pastels on black paper to get the red sunset that filled the sky with the dark waters. I love drawing the George Washington Bridge in Northern Manhattan. It's a landmark scene that keeps changing depending on the sky that day. That evening that John took the photo it was like the sky was on fire all spreading across Manhattan making the GW so alive.
The GW Bridge construction started in 1927, and when started, the estimated cost was $75,000,000. In 1931 the bridge was dedicated and opened on October 25, 1931. Its span is 4,760 feet in total, a width of 119 ft. and a height of 604 ft. The bridge sits near the sites of Fort Washington in NYC and Fort Lee in New Jersey, which were fortified positions used by General George Washington, and his American forces, to deter the occupation of NYC in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. The attempt was unsuccessful and he had to evacuate Manhattan by crossing between the 2 forts. Lit up in the evenings, it is a site to see!
As a draftsman I'm inspired by Van Gogh's brilliant art with forceful lines and colors, The paintings of the impressionist artists that gave light and life to their images and the towering buildings of German-American Expressionist Lyonell Feininger all enter my world of vision. There's a depth and perspective of time and space and rich tones and earth warm colors that ignite my subways and landscapes.
