My paintings and drawings of NYC art, look at the subways, architecture and landscapes of Mnahttan in a very unique way. I like to take fantasy with some abstract architecture and give a Syfy feel to my images. Buildings and underground subways infused with art deco and a surreal underworld. A safe maze that you can journey through and a heavenly city on this earth.
One of my series of the NYC Hall underground subways. The lights of yellow and orange give it a Phantom Of the Opera scene.
The lights in the background of the arches coming out give a glorious luminosity to the subway, and there is a graphic quality to the drawing. Done in colored pencils, wax art bars and oil pastels on a black board. The strong Art Deco design is seen throughout the textures and patterns and the passageway sweeping out make a dramatic scene for the platform. Never used anymore by the public this subway can be seen by staying on the #6 train and continuing past the last stop. It's not exactly legal to do since the tours stopped. The NY City Hall Subway opened on October 27, 1904 and was the first of its kind with electric brass chandeliers, intricate skylights, oak furnishings and white terra cotta. One of the most unique design elements is its lack of straight lines with curved entry ways and vaulted ceilings. The station has a delicacy and beauty like no other subway. In 1945 it closed due to the newer models that couldn't travel on all those curves. 180,000 people came on its opening day. George Lewis Heins and Christopher Grant La Farge, who also designed The Cathedral of St. John The Divine, were its designers. I wanted to capture an old Phatom of the Opera feel with a modern syfy landscape.
As a draftsman I'm inspired by Van Gogh's brilliant art with forceful lines and colors, The paintings of the impressionist artists that gave light and life to their images and the towering buildings of German-American Expressionist Lyonell Feininger all enter my world of vision. There's a depth and perspective of time and space and rich tones and earth warm colors that ignite my subways and landscapes.
