My paintings and drawings of NYC art, look at the subways, architecture and landscapes of Mnahttan in a very unique way. I like to take fantasy with some abstract architecture and give a Syfy feel to my images. Buildings and underground subways infused with art deco and a surreal underworld. A safe maze that you can journey through and a heavenly city on this earth.
Isham Park was named after one of the earliest families that settled in Inwood Park, Manhattan, and was given as a donation to the city.
This is part of the propery off Seaman Ave owned by the Isham family in Inwood Park. One of the earliest families to live close by my home where I pass every morning and evening. This was done on black paper with aqua stick oil pastels and oil pastels. If felt like a strong impressionistic scene when I saw it and that is how I approached it. Very serene, peaceful and beautiful to see everyday, especially at this time of year in spring. In 1862, 35 year old leather merchant, William Bradley Isahm rented a house and the property on a promontory on the uppermost top of the city. 2 years later he loved the place so much that he decided to purchase and for 50 years his family took very special care, clearing the land and planting most of the trees. He then donated the property to the city as a park that bears the family name. During the revolutionary war in November 1776, the Hessian army and the Pennsylvania troops had a fierce battle in Inwood Hill Park.
As a draftsman I'm inspired by Van Gogh's brilliant art with forceful lines and colors, The paintings of the impressionist artists that gave light and life to their images and the towering buildings of German-American Expressionist Lyonell Feininger all enter my world of vision. There's a depth and perspective of time and space and rich tones and earth warm colors that ignite my subways and landscapes.
